- Before the Virginia company could take all of the settlers to find Jamestown, they had to go talk to the king about a charter. Being a joint-stock company helped pay for the journey. A few years after they arrived they wanted more control over their government so they got burgesses.
- So they can find gold and establish trade for fur and fish.
